ABOUT Project Lead The Way (PLTW)

PLTW Gateway Sparks Engagement and Illuminates Possibilities

  • Middle school is a time of exploration, a time when students are figuring out what they’re passionate about today and how that relates to who they’ll become tomorrow.

  • During this transitional time, PLTW Gateway’s 10 units empower students to lead their own discovery. The hands-on program boosts classroom engagement and excitement, drives collaboration, and inspires “aha! moments” and deep comprehension. And as students engage in PLTW’s activities in computer science, engineering, and biomedical science, they see a range of paths and possibilities they can look forward to in high school and beyond.

About

6th-8th

Sixth Grade: Innovators and Makers

Seventh Grade: Design and Modeling

Eigth Grade: App Creators

Computer Science for Innovators and Makers

This unit will allow students to discover computer science concepts and skills by creating personally relevant, tangible, and shareable projects.Throughout the unit, students will learn about programming for the physical world by blending hardware design and software development, allowing students to discover computer science concepts and skills by creating personally relevant, tangible, and shareable projects.

Design and Modeling

Students discover the design process and develop an understanding of the influence of creativity and innovation in their lives. They are then challenged and empowered to use and apply what they’ve learned throughout the unit to design a therapeutic toy for a child who has cerebral palsy.

Physical computing projects will promote student awareness of interactive systems, including Internet of Things (IoT) devices, and broaden their understanding of abstract computer science concepts through meaningful and authentic applications.

App Creators

This unit will expose students to computer science as a means of computationally analyzing and developing solutions to authentic problems through mobile app development, and will convey the positive impact of the application of computer science to other disciplines and to society.

Students will customize their experience by choosing a problem that interests them from the areas of health, environment, emergency preparedness, education, community service, and school culture. Because problems in the real world involve more than one discipline, the unit will introduce students to biomedical science concepts as they work on solutions for the specific problems they choose to tackle.

Project Lead The Way Teacher

The Joe Barnhart Acadamy

Mrs. Allison Wilburn

Hello! My name is Allison Wilburn and I am the Project Lead The Way Instructor at The Joe Barnhart Academy. This is my eighth year teaching. Before teaching PLTW I was an Agricultural Science Teacher for five years.  I have a passion and love for teaching and I truly believe I express this everyday of my life. I am a mother of three beautiful kids, Clara (5 years old), Thomas (4 years old), and Heston (2 years old). My husband runs a ranch outside of Live Oak/McMullen County and without him I could not do what I do, for he supports my career/passion. My most recent accomplishment was winning ESC-2 Secondary Teacher of The Year. I teach for the end results not the now results. PLTW is a program that will get the mind thinking and engaged, not just in my classroom but in all situations of everyday life!
